The final week of my poetry workshop just ended. So bittersweet. This class was rewarding, inspiring, and helped me understand I can always write, and can do so without succumbing to my self-doubt so often. Whatever my thoughts may be, and however scattered they may feel, by putting pen to paper I am instantly writing and creating. Editing is an integral part of that, nothing will ever be (nor perhaps should be) perfect… I’m lucky to have had the experience because it seriously encouraged me to be writing poetry again regularly. Thank you Professor Mullen :) What a sweetheart of a woman! Here’s our last assignment… Write about something positive in a negative light.
An Ode to the End of Eros’ Errors
Please, I pray you,
Dart your eyes when he invites you with his sweet smile.
Venomous ivories lurk behind those pouty red lips.
A malicious brain beneath those satin curls,
Innards of human sanity inside that chubby belly.
Relentless, irrational, he lives to gnash deeply.
So don’t be naïve. You won’t fare well.
Butterflies, flowers, paper hearts
sliced more perfectly than real ones ever do look,
All designed to soothe the poor, unknowing children.
It won’t be long until they realize,
It’s no coincidence Cupid wields a weapon.
He’ll aim, you’ll fall,
He’ll yank, you’ll crawl.
But don’t be silly. There’s no fleeing.
So you figure, then, you’ll reason with him?
You’ll outwit the puerile creature?
I can tell you, a sharp tongue is no match for a sharp shooter.
He’ll have taken flight, your stolen language and logic
Tucked under his wings,
All before you realize what’s left at the crime scene
Is your crimson cruor.
